Hokkaido winter 2026–27: December, January, or February?
JMA's 1991-2020 Sapporo normals record 113 cm of total snowfall in December, 137 cm in January, and 116 cm in February. These are long-term city observations, not ski-resort powder guarantees. The 2027 Sapporo Snow Festival is now confirmed for February 4-11, directly overlapping Hong Kong's February 6 Lunar New Year holiday.
Planning context for overseas travelers
Families: verify room occupancy, bedding, child policies, and winter cancellation terms. Luggage-heavy trips: reduce hotel changes and check the final airport-to-hotel leg. Budget: Hokkaido's accommodation tax has applied since April 1, 2026; compare the itemized total and any municipal tax. This page has no live flight, price, or room feed.
December vs January vs February
| Month | Main advantage | Main pressure | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | Early-winter Sapporo illumination is an annual pattern; normal snowfall totals 113 cm | Resort opening dates vary; the late-December to early-January period adds year-end pressure | City lights and Christmas atmosphere, with skiing as an option rather than the only purpose |
| January | The highest Sapporo monthly snowfall normal of these three: 137 cm | New Year pressure early in the month; ski and hot-spring weekends still concentrate demand | Snow-focused visitors who can use mid-to-late January |
| February | Verified Sapporo Snow Festival, February 4-11; normal maximum snow depth reaches 95 cm | Festival demand overlaps Hong Kong Lunar New Year; other regional holiday demand needs rechecking | Travelers for whom the festival is the main purpose |
Powder depends on temperature, wind, timing, elevation, and resort operations. A Sapporo city weather normal is useful for seasonal comparison but cannot promise snow quality at a particular resort or on a particular day.
What the JMA Sapporo numbers actually mean
| Month | Total snowfall depth | Days with at least 1 cm | Maximum snow depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 113 cm | 18.2 | 47 cm |
| January | 137 cm | 21.7 | 76 cm |
| February | 116 cm | 18.4 | 95 cm |
Total snowfall adds new snowfall during the month. Maximum snow depth is the deepest accumulated cover on the ground, which is why February can have a lower monthly snowfall total than January but a higher maximum depth. All values are 1991-2020 normals, not a 2026–27 forecast.
December: lights, but no guessed resort opening dates
Sapporo's official tourism page establishes White Illumination as a recurring winter event, but it still displays the 2025–26 dates. This guide therefore treats 2026–27 illumination timing as annual-pattern only. Ski openings are handled the same way: no exact date is inserted until the individual resort publishes it.
- For city sightseeing, compare pre-Christmas dates separately from the year-end holiday window.
- If skiing is essential, confirm the target resort's 2026–27 terrain, lifts, and transport before committing.
- Treat late December through early January as a separate pressure window for transport and opening arrangements.
- A Sapporo base can reduce luggage moves, but resort day-trip feasibility still depends on official transport.
January: deeper winter without the festival
Sapporo's January normal snowfall is 137 cm, the highest of the three months, and the normal count of days with at least 1 cm is also highest. That supports a “more established winter” planning label, not a daily powder promise. If dates are flexible, mid-to-late January is worth comparing after the New Year window and before the February festival.
Compare mid-to-late January
It removes the early-month year-end window and the February festival, while weekends and resort demand still require a live check.
Use resort data, not Sapporo alone
Niseko, Rusutsu, Furano, and other areas need their own snow, lift, and transport checks.
Do not stack every transfer
Avoid combining arrival, a long bus, hotel check-in, and equipment fitting into one weather-sensitive day.
February: the festival and Lunar New Year overlap
The official festival site schedules February 4-11, 2027; the 2027 venue lineup has not been published yet (2026 used Odori, Tsudome, and Susukino). Hong Kong's gazetted calendar places Lunar New Year Day on February 6, with general holidays on February 6, 8, and 9. That overlap is verified. Mainland China and Taiwan holiday arrangements and outbound volumes have not been checked here, so wider Chinese-language-market pressure remains annual-pattern rather than verified.
| Window | Status | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| February 4-5 | Festival opening | Already an event-pressure window even before Hong Kong's holiday begins. |
| February 6, 8, 9 | Gazetted Hong Kong holidays inside the festival | Family rooms, continuous stays, luggage, and preferred flight options deserve an early cancellable hold. |
| February 10-11 | Festival final phase | The event is still operating; recheck departure and airport transport. |
| From February 12 | Post-festival comparison window | Removes the festival itself but does not guarantee an immediate price or crowd drop. |
Accommodation tax applies throughout this winter
Hokkaido confirms that its prefectural accommodation tax took effect on April 1, 2026 for guests at hotels, ryokan, simple lodgings, and registered private lodgings. Some municipalities can also operate their own tax. This guide does not force one tax amount onto every stay: check the official rate table for the municipality and price tier, then compare the itemized booking total.
Hotel and flight timing by trip constraint
| Trip | Pressure | Planning action |
|---|---|---|
| December lights and city trip | Medium; Christmas and New Year differ | Hold a cancellable room and adjust after 2026–27 illumination dates are published. |
| Mid-to-late January Sapporo plus skiing | Medium to high by resort and weekend | Check hotel and resort transport together rather than booking the city first. |
| February 4-11 Snow Festival | High | The event dates are verified; fixed trips should secure suitable room type, cancellation terms, and flight options. |
| Family trip during Hong Kong Lunar New Year | Very high overlap | Reduce hotel moves and solve occupancy, bedding, luggage, and airport access early. |
| Snow only, flexible dates | Adjustable | Compare mid-to-late January with February 12 onward, then check destination snow conditions. |
Use the Japan hotel booking timing guide for cancellable holds and the Japan comfort calendar for wider month and region trade-offs.
